This DIY is a Creative Must For Chinese New Year
New Years has come and gone and 2022 has begun. However, according to the Lunar Calendar, the new year has only just begun, for February 1st is the Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival). In Chinese culture, red envelopes filled with money are gifted to bestow happiness and fortune to those you love. It is time to hand out those lucky red envelopes to loved ones. Read on for some tips for designing and crafting your own red envelopes.
Create Your Own Envelopes
Bring a tradition to your Chinese New Year celebration with a red envelope. During the new year, red envelopes are handed out to children by friends and loved ones and usually with 'lucky money’ inside. A quick and easy craft to learn and a great way to learn how to write Chinese characters. Grab all the craft tools you need in our craft range here. Don’t forget to stamp or draw a tiger to represent this year’s zodiac animal.

What you need:
- Red envelopes
- Gold metallic markers
- Black markers
- Gold glitter
- Glue
Method:
- 1. Using the gold metallic markers, decorate the borders of the red envelopes in pretty Chinese patterns.
- 2. Take your black or gold marker to add in Chinese symbols, for example ‘Good Luck’ to the outside of the envelope.
- 3. For pizzazz, place some glue on the outside of the envelopes and shake the gold glitter for it to stick. Remember to tap off any excess glitter.
- 4. Fill the envelopes with money (for the younger kids, try some chocolate money with gold wrapping).
