The Ultimate Guide to Throwing a 90s Party
Ah yes, the 90s. From iconic sitcoms, mom jeans, boybands and girl groups, to unforgettable pop culture moments, it was a decade of personality, fun and freedom.
A time when you had to venture to the local Blockbuster to rent a VHS, record a song you liked from the radio on a cassette, and had everyone’s phone number memorised.
Whilst I haven't lived through the era, there's a distinct feeling of nostalgia that surrounds it.
That’s why I’ve decided to throw a 90s themed party to celebrate the coolest decade ever.
If you’re planning on hosting a 90s party too, here are my totally rad ideas that’ll take you back in time.
1. Party Attire

The 90s was all about flair and fun, so get into the spirit of things and transform your celebration into a dress up party. After all, the 90s saw some iconic looks.
Whether it’s a DIY look, or a full costume extravaganza, there are so many 90s characters you could be - Power Rangers, Rugrats, Simpsons, Super Mario Bros. Find them all and more in our 90s collection online at CostumeBox.
Why not create a DIY runway and have everyone show off their looks? The best costume wins a 90s themed prize of a Tamagotchi, Gameboy or Rubix cube.
Be sure to snap heaps of photos of all your costumed guests and make sure it’s on a Polaroid or film camera for a true retro aesthetic.
2. Music

No party is without its music. And the 90s had some of the best.
The decade saw a rise of various music genres, including grunge, Eurodance, hip-hop and my personal favourite, R&B.
No need to worry about crafting the perfect 90s playlist, because we’ve curated a fabulous playlist for you and your guests to party like it's 1999. Check it out here:
Or if you want to go full retro, be sure to dust off those CDs.
Turn on the disco lights, crank up the volume and break out those iconic 90s dance moves.
3. Food

It’s time to bring back the birthday party essentials.
I’m talking about fairy bread, potato smiles, party pies, cordial and freddo jelly cups.
You could even create a lolly bar with all the favourites like Hubba Bubba, Nerds, Wizz Fizz and more.
And for party favours, provide an assortment of snacks and sweets in loot bags or boxes.
4. Decorations

Retro inspired decorations are a must if you really want to capture the 90s scene.
Photo booths are always a hit. Give your guests some photo props like a brick phone, Gameboy or bumbags to add interest and nostalgia to the photos.
You could also use these props as decorative pieces around your event space.
A fun DIY idea is to collect blank CDs, tie them to string or twine and hang them from the ceiling.
Adorn your tables with other memorable objects from the 90s like troll dolls, Tamagotchis, and paper 3D glasses. You can even use old floppy disks as drink coasters.
And of course, the decorations would not be complete without balloons, streamers and a disco ball.

Enjoy your night in the 90s. Play some good music, dance your favourite moves and reminisce on the old times (even if you are a 2000s kid like me), because everyone deserves a chance to live the 90s, if only for a day.
Now I’ll just go back to watching Clueless for the 314th time.
