Happy International Womens Day From CostumeBox
Happy International Women's Day from the team here at CostumeBox! Did you know that we are a company made up almost entirely of women? Yes, that’s right - along with our two founders Nikki and Roma, women make up 89% of the staff here at CostumeBox.
As we look to celebrate IWD this Tuesday 8th March, we’ve reflected on some of our favourite fictional female characters and how they have inspired us.
Nikki - Co Founder and CEO:
Who is your female character of choice? Wonder Woman from the 1976-1979 TV series.
Why? I have loved every version of Wonder Woman, but the 1970s TV show with Lynda Carter is where I first became a fan as a little kid. She was so strong and cool in any situation, and always 100% feminine at the same time showing that those characteristics could go hand in hand.

Katie - Operations Manager
Who is your female character of choice? Ellie Sattler from ‘Jurassic Park’.
Why? Tough and intelligent, Ellie is my pick for a powerful female character.
Not afraid to get her hands dirty and doesn't stand idly by when there is work to be done. I've seen her described as a badass feminist and I like that.
Hands straight into poop to find out what's wrong with the dino, fixing power when there are loose scary dinosaurs. She's a hero!

Vanessa - Digital Content Manager
Who is your female character of choice? Emma Swan from the ‘Once Upon A Time’ TV series.
Why? Once Upon a Time is full of strong female characters that inspire but my favourite is Emma Swan. She’s a badass Sheriff, single mum and Saviour of the Fairytale folk, battling evil villains in every direction, while simultaneously overcoming her own inner traumas and helping heroes AND villains overcome theirs to become the best versions of themselves.

Ally - Buyer
Who is your female character of choice? Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series.
Why? Being the brightest witch of her age, Hermione has been and always will be an inspiring role model. For generations of kids and young adults, the character has embodied incredible strength, resilience, compassion and kindness. Emma Watson, who portrays Hermione in the films, is just as influential with her advocacy for women's rights and environmental issues.

Jess - PartyList Manager
Who is your female character of choice? Dr Kay Scarpetta from a series of crime novels by Patricia Cornwell.
Why? Dr Kay Scarpetta is a female forensic pathologist at the top of her profession in a male dominated industry. Her character is of Italian descent, and always impeccably dressed. She is tough but fair, intelligent, and independent - traits that I admire in a role model. She is a perfectionist, a workaholic, and loves cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients.

Lauren - Content Producer
Who is your female character of choice? Elle Woods from Legally Blonde.
Why? While thought of as just a 'dumb blonde', Elle Woods proves everyone, including her ex boyfriend, wrong by being accepted into Harvard Law School. Her character shows that if you really want something in life you can achieve it, even if everyone else thinks you can't! (Plus she loves dogs and the colour pink).

Chantel - Marketing and Design
Who is your female character of choice? Jess Day from the sitcom ‘New Girl’.
Why? She's quirky and weird, but loveable and hilarious. She often sings her points in a discussion. Others around her are often confused by her actions, but she owns them.

Paige - Buying Assistant
Who is your female character of choice? Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls
Why? Filled with Sugar, Spice and Everything nice Buttercup is not just my favourite Powerpuff girl but also a unique female character. Fighting crime AND evil to protect the city of Townsville alongside her two sisters, Buttercup was one of the first female cartoon characters I saw that didn’t fit the common stereotypes of femininity. She may be the toughest fighter but she is also very sensitive and would do anything for her family!

Stephen - Customer Service
Who is your female character of choice? Marguerite Blakeney from The Scarlet Pimpernel
Why? Lady Blakeney could just carry on living a life of luxury, but she shows herself to be highly principled individual who is willing to pay the ultimate price in the name of loyalty. A strongly willed character who shows dertermination and depth of character in incredibly trying circumstances.

Bec - Accounts Receivable Manager
Who is your female character of choice? Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables
Why? Anne is a highly spirited red-headed orphan. She loves hard and is a passionate dreamer. Even though she makes mistakes along the way she's always striving to be a good person.

Adam - IT & Content Producer
Who is your female character of choice? Ellen Ripley from Alien
Why? Ellen is my favourite character and the main protagonist of the Alien franchise. Her performance is iconic and paves the way for women in Science fiction. The most memorable moment is when Ellen takes on the Alien Queen by herself.

Natalie - Content Producer
Who is your female character of choice? Clarise Starling from Silence of the Lambs
Why? Clarice Starling is an FBI agent in training and although she is trapped in a male dominated profession, she is still, I believe, the toughest character in the film.

Fee - Merchandise Planning Manager
Who is your female character of choice? Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Why? Buffy Summers was and always will be my idol. She was a normal teenager before becoming a slayer and now has the responsilbity of battling vampires, demons and the forces of darkness. Her quick wit, sassiness and ability to kick serious vampire butt is what makes her the coolest girl around..... not to mention her "keen fashion sense".
