What Does A Dirndl Mean?

A dirndl (pronounced dern-dull) is a traditional German dress for women, sometimes known as an Oktoberfest dress or a German maid costume. A dirndl costume usually comes in three pieces: a white blouse, a skirt and an apron. When you buy a dirndl, all three pieces come together. What Do Women Wear To Oktoberfest?

Women’s Oktoberfest costumes generally consist of a dirndl dress, paired with long braids (or a wig if you have short hair) and knee-high socks. When it comes to Oktoberfest costumes, women’s options can be even more fun than men’s.

The traditional shoes are leather with a comfortable rubber sole plus harder heels and toes to make noise while dancing, but you can get away with either ballet flats, Mary Janes (flat shoes with a strap across the foot), or sturdy ankle boots. If you want to wear higher shoes, go for a thicker heel and a Mary Jane or buckle strap rather than a thin heel. Avoid open toed shoes as there are likely to be plenty of broken glasses and spilled beer on the floor.
