Cute Santa Little Helpers! 5 Adorable Christmas Costumes For Kids

Author Gonzalo / Posts / Published: 17/12/2019

With the holiday season nearly upon us, it’s time to start thinking about Christmas costumes for kids. We can all remember when we were kids and how we loved playing dress up and your kids are no different. Given the chance, they will play dress-up all day long, so why not give them their very own kid’s costume for Christmas?

Whether you want to make your own costume or buy one from CostumeBox, we have oodles of fabulous Christmas costume ideas for kids. Some are really easy to put together and others need a little more dedication, but your kids will love you all the more for giving them their very own dress-up costume. Cute ideas for Christmas include a kid’s elf costume, gingerbread costume, Santa suit, Disney Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy and nativity scene costumes for kids.

Let’s take a look at some of these DIY options that you can put together quickly, making your little one’s dreams come true this Christmas.

1. Kid’s elf costume: Kid’s love dressing up as one of Santa’s elves, so an adorable kid’s elf costume is going to go down a treat. To create an elf costume for a girl, it’s a good idea to start with a red or green pinafore dress or a red/green skirt and waistcoat combination. Add a white long-sleeved t-shirt and you have the basics for an elf costume. Next, you need a pair of red and white striped leggings or long socks that can be purchased online, as can the elf’s hat. For a little boy’s elf costume, do exactly the same, but they can wear shorts or long pants (girls can wear these as well). You could also use other primary colours, bringing yellow into the mix, because elves love to be well-dressed! Another tip is to scour your local charity shops for these clothes, particularly the vests, as you may not have them at home. If you don’t have the time to pull together a DIY kid’s elf costume at home, then check out Santa’s grotto at CostumeBox for a range of readymade Christmas elf costumes.

2. Gingerbread Costume: This is one of the cutest Christmas costumes for kids ever! There are many ways to create a gingerbread costume, so let’s check out two fairly easy options to get you started. The first design needs brown shorts or leggings and a brown t-shirt. Then all you need to do is to glue three big round coloured circles down the front of the t-shirt to look like blobs of icing. To add a touch of flair, you can glue white Ric Rac ribbon along the hem, cuffs and neck of the t-shirt and down the sides and hem of the shorts or trousers. The second option for a gingerbread costume is to use a beige t-shirt, shorts or trousers and an oblong box with holes for the head and arms (large enough so the box covers your child from their neck to their waist). Paint the three blobs of coloured icing down the front of the box. Next, make a round dinner plate size face from cardboard with a painted gingerbread face and tie it with a string behind their head. This gingerbread costume is a hoot and one of our favourite Christmas costume ideas for kids this year. If you want a faster option, then check out CostumeBox, because we have a lovely gingerbread dress-up costume that’s perfect for Christmas parties!

3. Santa Suit:

Kid’s love dressing up in a Santa suit for Christmas and they are fairly easy to put together at home. For little girls, you need a red long-sleeved dress so she can be Mrs Claus and for little boys, you need a pair of red shorts or trousers and a red Father Christmas jacket. This might be harder to achieve for boys than girls because the jacket might be difficult to find. So a tip here is to use a red long-sleeved sweatshirt and add white felt to the ends of the sleeves, hem, neckline and down the front using a glue gun; you can also add this white felt to the little girl’s dress in the same spots. Three white pompoms down the front of the girls dress and a wide black belt for the little boy means that you are nearly done! You just need Santa hats for both of them, and a Santa beard for the little boy’s costume, and you are done. If you are looking for easy Christmas costumes for kids, you can’t get any simpler than this! If you want to cheat, even more, check out the kid’s Santa suits at CostumeBox!

4. Disney Nutcracker Sugar Plum Fairy:

Every little girl wants to dress up as a fairy at least once in their lives, so why not a Sugar Plum Fairy from the Nutcracker? This is another of our easy Christmas costumes for kids because all you really need is a colourful ballerina’s tutu dress and white leggings. A lovely little tiara wouldn’t go amiss and a pair of fairy wings as well (you can buy these online). To top it off, you could also give her a lovely fairy wand. Just think of the photo ops over Christmas! CostumeBox has some adorable Sugar Plum Fairy costumes that will save you all this work!

5. Nativity Scene Costumes for Kids:

The easiest Nativity scene costumes for kids are the three wise men, but girls can also dress up as a wise woman as well. The costume for boys and girls can be the same, so you basically need a long dress, wide sash and cloak of any colour. Your local charity shop should hopefully have something you can use, but if not, you might need to pull out the sewing machine and get creative! This is one of the Christmas costumes for kids that might take a little more work than the others if you can’t find the basic items to use for this costume. You can also make a crown for the wise men out of gold coloured cardboard and give them a little wooden box filled with treasures! If your DIY skills don’t reach as far as the sewing machine, pop into CostumeBox and pick up one of our cute and affordable Nativity scene costumes for kids instead.
