Wave that rainbow flag high in the sky this Mardi Gras. This year I will be digging out my brightest makeup and painting my face and body in glitter. Mardi Gras is a great time of year for glitter, bright colours and celebrating who you are! As a trained makeup artist, I love being able to showcase my skills and excitement for makeup at Mardi Gras.

Here are my 3 favourite makeup ideas for Mardi Gras:

1. Shine Like a Mirror Ball with Buckets of Glitter

As a huge fan of everything glitter, I believe there is no such thing as too much glitter. The sparkle and captivating iridescent colours, what’s not to love! I always keep a good supply of glitter eyeshadow, eyelashes and eyeliner in my makeup collection. Check out this glitter makeup look I love.

To recreate this look:

  • Sweep your eyelid with a strong orange pigment eyeshadow.
  • Using a smaller brush, apply a darker orange eyeshadow along your eyelid crease for definition.
  • Grab an even smaller brush, like a blending brush and apply the same eyeshadows to your bottom lashes.
  • Add a touch of gold shimmer eyeshadow to the inner corners.
  • To really make your eyes pop, apply black eyeliner to your waterline.
  • Now for the fun part. Grab your glitter adhesive and apply a layer just underneath your eyes in a triangular shape. Apply gold glitter over the glue.
  • For an even more striking look, apply a strong bronzer to your cheekbones. Like in the pic.
  • For any leftover glitter, apply to your hair parting.

2. Bold Colours To Suit That Bold Personality

Take your creativity to the next level with vibrant rainbow makeup designs. Send your eyes over the rainbow and use every bold colour you have. What I love about bold makeup is how creative and imaginative you can be. For most of the year when I apply my makeup looks, I choose either a bold eye look or bold lip colour but during Mardi Gras I step out in both. Go hard this Mardi Gras with show stopping colours!

To recreate this look:

Right eye:

  • For the yellow and orange based eye design. Take a small flat and fluffy brush and apply a yellow shade in the inner corner, all the way up into the brow bone and to the middle of your eyelids.
  • Grab a red shade on a new brush, very lightly press into the outer corner and slightly blend into the yellow.
  • Using the same brush, grab an orange and lightly pat between the yellow and red.
  • Grabbing a hot pink shade, apply just outside your outer corner and lightly blend into the red.
  • For extra pizzazz, apply black eyeliner along your top lash line. Don’t forget your striking fake lashes to finish the look.

Left eye:

  • For the left eye, use the same steps as above but instead use colours; green, blue and purple.

3. Bring the Most Colourful Decade Back - the 80s!

Take your makeup inspiration from an era when wearing electric blues and bold lips was a fashion must. Coat your eyes with multiple bright pigments and sweep layers of blush along your cheek bones. I may not have been born in the 80s but I still love the over the top outfits, voluptuous hairstyles and crowd pleasing songs. I’ve learnt no matter what your eye colour, complexion or personality, anyone could pull off a bold 80s makeup look.

To recreate this look:

  • Grab a small flat fluffy brush and apply a purple shadow along your eyelid. Apply along your lower lash line too.
  • Using another small clean brush, apply a blue shade to the outer corner and when blending into the blue, use patting motion.
  • Apply the same blue to the outer corner of bottom lashes and inner corner.
  • Using a fluffy brush, grab a green shade and lightly apply a small amount and blend into the blue outer corner.
  • Using a flat brush, apply a shimmering white just under your eyebrows and brow bone.
  • To give a true 80s look, sweep a good amount of blush along your cheekbone and keep applying all the way to your temple. This gives the illusion of a sharper and higher cheekbone.
