Women’s Comic Characters

Women’s comic characters have come a long way in the past thirty or forty years, even though they are hardly sexism free! It’s fair to say that these female characters are a reflection of the times, so we have seen some positive changes over the years. We’re not there yet, and gender bias still exists, but now we have numerous inspiring female character superheroes as role models! Jumping from ‘women are the weaker sex’, we now see female comic characters that are stronger, faster and smarter than men. Marvel in particular, has a large range of female superheroes who can save the world and still look fabulous! So let’s check out some of these female superheroes and find out how you can create your own women’s comic book costumes.

Wonder Woman costume

Wonder Woman was created seven decades ago and since then, generations of little girls have carried their sandwiches to school in a Wonder Woman lunchbox. Wonder Woman is one of the longest running superheroes of all time. Fighting for peace in a man’s world, Wonder Woman, aka Princess Diana of Themyscira, is a symbol of truth, justice and equality. She is the daughter of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons and Zeus, the mightiest of the Olympian Gods; Wonder Woman is her people’s gift to humanity. She leads by example and is a beacon of hope to all those in need. In our world, she has super strength, super combat skills, super agility and magical weaponry. If you are ready to create your own Wonder Woman costume, you need to start with either knee high red boots or red stockings. You will need a blue very-short mini skirt with white stars if possible, and a red and gold bustier. A long dark wig, gold headband, gold cuffs, and sword give your costume an added air of authenticity. If you want to make it easy on yourself, select a from the CostumeBox vaults which come with everything you need for a fabulous night as Wonder Woman!

Queen Storm costume

As a member of the X-Men, Storm is a mutant heroine fighting for peace and equal rights between mutants and humans. She’s descended from an ancient race of African priestesses, all who have white hair, blue eyes and the ability to wield magic. She was orphaned at the age of five, when her parents (her mother was Princess N’Dara) were killed after a plane crashed into their home in Cairo (during the Arab-Israeli Conflict). Through many trails and tribulations, Storm’s magical power to control the weather appeared, and thinking she was a Goddess, she used her powers for good. She joined the X-Men many years later (after realising she was a mutant) and became a very capable leader within their group. Storm is one of the more modern women’s comic characters and superheroes and has also appeared with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers. For your Queen Storm costume, you need to start with a long white wig and then you can basically go anywhere, as long as it’s black! Storm is usually seen wearing a skinny black body suit and black cape, but you could opt for long black boots and body suit. You could also break open the Costumebox vault and purchase a Queen Storm costume that comes with a cape, headpiece and a jumpsuit with belt.

Captain Carol Danvers costume

Image courtesy of Also known as Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers is a former United States Air Force pilot who obtained her cosmic powers during an accident. She was exposed to the limitless energy of the Tesseract after it was blown up by Thanos (the Avenger’s biggest villain) because he wanted the power of the Infinity Stones for himself. The Tesseract was a crystalline containment vessel for the Space Stone, one of six stones that contain massive energy. She was made into a Kree hybrid, and returned to earth with all her memories removed. Fighting for the enemy, she eventually remembers her past, defeats the Kree and joins the other superheroes of earth to protect humanity. She has super strength, speed, agility and reflexes, and she’s one of the most powerful beings in the universe! Captain Carol Danvers is a great role model for International Women’s Day!For her costume, you need a blue and red jump suit with gold detailing, star emblem on the chest, and a red and gold belt. This might test your artistic powers, so why not check out the Costumebox vaults and purchase our Captain Marvel Deluxe Women’s Costume?

Black Widow costume

Natasha Romanova, aka, the Black Widow is rumoured to be related to the Tzars of Russia, but her origins are hidden in mystery. One version of her upbringing is that she was raised by a Russian soldier after her mother threw her out of a burning building to save her life. There were many attempts on her life, but following an abduction, she was saved by Captain America and Logan. Whether this is true or not, she later marries a Soviet test pilot, but was forced into becoming a spy when her husband’s life was threatened. She became the Soviet’s answer to Captain America, becoming known as the Black Widow (the KGB told her that her husband was dead). After numerous attempts to kill Iron Man, Natasha tried to join the Avengers, but was captured and interrogated by the Russians. The Avengers saved her life and she began working for S.H.I.E.L.D. – the rest is history! For your Black Widow costume, you need a navy blue jump suit with knee and arm padding and a belt. Since it’s all one colour, it shouldn’t be hard to find one of the jumpsuits, but for an authentic look, check out CostumeBox’s vaults for our version of the Black Widow costume!

Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, and her twin brother joined HYDRA, but whilst undergoing experiments, received superpowers as a result. With telekinesis, telepathy and energy manipulation powers, the twins joined Ultron when HYDRA fell, but switched sides and joined the Avengers, when they realised Ultron’s evil intentions. Her brother died during the battle with Ultron, but the Scarlet Witch survived. She began living undercover, but eventually ended up taking refuge with the Avengers in Wakanda from the evil Black Order. She was killed in the Snap – a massive fallout across the universe that wiped out 50% of all life (after the Infinity Gauntlet was activated by Thanos). When the effects of the Snap were reversed, she returned to life and helped to defeat Thanos in the battle of Earth. The Scarlet Witch is one of the most iconic women’s comic characters and her costume is easy to put together. You just need a pair of dark brown boots, leggings and thigh length jacket, matched with a red silky top and gloves. That’s it! Of course, if you don’t have the time to pull this together yourself, checkout the CostumeBox vaults for our fabulous version of the Scarlet Witch!
